About this Event
The First Half of Life: Reimagining Jung’s Forgotten Developmental Stage with Satya Doyle Byock
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Satya Doyle Byock is an author and Jungian psychotherapist in Portland, Oregon, and is the founding Director of The Salome Institute of Jungian Studies, where she offers seminars online. Satya has also developed an engaging podcast taking listeners on a journey through Jung’s profound publication The Red Book. Her work focuses on the stage of adulthood between adolescence and midlife - the stage that Jung called “The First Half of Life". She re-explores the standard developmental model of Analytical psychology, which views individuation as beginning in the Second Half of Life. Her book, Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood, is now out in paperback with Random House and will be published in the UK and Australia with Penguin Press in January 2024. https://satyabyock.com
ABOUT THE LECTURE
The field of Analytical Psychology has largely ignored the development stage that Jung termed the “First Half of Life” while emphasizing the correlation between individuation and the Second Half of Life. As a result, many younger adults seeking guidance on how to live in relationship to their inner lives feel excluded from Jung’s work. In this talk, Satya Doyle Byock, Jungian psychotherapist and author of Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood, will review Jung’s developmental framework and emphasize how people in the first half of adulthood can benefit from Jung’s psychology. In questioning the oft-repeated notion that individuation begins in the Second Half of Life, Satya will explore various sources, including Jung’s Vision Seminars with Christiana Morgan, an American woman in her late 20s who was in analysis with Jung. Satya will draw upon her ongoing research and clinical work as outlined in her 2015 article in Psychological Perspectives entitled “The Inner World of the First Half of Life: Analytical Psychology’s Forgotten Developmental Stage” and her book, Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood.
