About this Event
JUNGIAN LECTURE: Trauma (Traumlosigkeit): Recovering the Dream State after Overwhelm
by Joel Kroeker, MMT, RCC-ACS, Jungian Analyst
This experiential presentation explores the relationship between trauma and the rich, life-giving reality of dreamwork as an ever-present invitation to restore and re-establish abundant life
In this talk, we explore beyond current conceptualizations of "trauma." This presentation plays with the etymological roots of Trauma/Traum as being in 'states of overwhelm' and also dreaming and dreamlessness with some help from Ogden's Dreamthinking. In overwhelm, we lose this rich and essential capacity, finding ourselves stuck outside of the dreaming in the literalized, concrete, thin and lifeless location that we keep revisiting in a desperate attempt to anxiously dream the nightmare forward. If we look at the state of overwhelm (intrapsychically, interpersonally, transpersonally, collectively) in this context, and find a way to move toward a "place beyond place" (as in Corbin's mundus imaginalis), we start to have more creative, imaginative and digestible thoughts — we begin to recover our reverie, reflectivity, reflexivity, and our imaginal mythopoetic world. Ideally, this presentation can take us past the current saturation and overuse of the word "trauma" and into a more rich and diverse palette of sensorial and experiential vocabulary.
“A dream that is not understood remains a mere occurrence; understood it becomes a living experience.” C.G Jung
