About this Event

JUNGIAN LECTURE: The Magic Circle: Depth Psychology & Gaming

by Joel Crichton, Jungian Therapist, Professional Artist, Actor, Musician and Educator

Games and gaming—what needs do they satisfy in the human psyche? What is it about the human psyche that wants to game?

Games and gaming are have become nearly ubiquitous in our current culture and are often misunderstood and villainized--but equally, they are loved and celebrated. Once the domain of youth, many adults are now becoming engaged in gaming. What is it about the game that the human psyche is so drawn to? What does the game provide us--and what does it take away?

This talk will embark on a Jungian and archetypal exploration of these questions, weaving in dreams, myth, and the deep symbolism of games and gaming experiences from games as ancient the Chinese strategy board game “Goto present-day online strategy games such as Defense of the Ancients or “DotA”.

This event is an in-person lecture held at the Stan Hagen Theatre, 2300 Ryan Road, North Island College, Courtenay, BC - tickets can also be purchased (cash only) at the door.
